Kilchattan Bay on the Isle of Bute is an ideal place to do some ship spotting. All naval, merchant ships and leisure crafts passing through the Firth of Clyde, in and out of the Clyde ports, pass by Kilchattan Bay.
So as a visitor, Kilchattan Bay is a great place to do some ship watching. There are fantastic views of the Firth of Clyde both north and east and the continual changes in the lighting and weather can make for some memorable views.
Whilst on a walk or whilst wandering around on the beach, binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens is all you need to scan the shipping lanes. If you are lucky enough to be staying in the village, with a sea view, you can spend hours watching the shipping lanes from the comfort of your accommodation.
Vessels in the Firth of Clyde include oil tankers, cargo ships, cruise liners visiting the port of Greenock, fishing vessels, naval ships and submarines. There are also plenty of smaller leisure vessels including sailing yachts which drop anchor at times overnight in Kilchattan Bay.
